Ms. Sue's favorite new picture books:

Friends Stick Together
Hannah E. Harrison
Picture Book
Ages 4-8
A heartwarming story about what it truly means to be a friend with someone who is very different from you. A funny read-aloud book for parents to share with their children.

Ocean Meets Sky
The Fan Brothers
Picture Book
Ages 4-8
A delightful tale about a young boy’s search for the magical place his grandfather described to him in stories. Beautifully illustrated.

What Happens Next
Susan Hughes
Parenting Book/Picture Book
Ages 4+
An unique look at the world of bullies and the bullied, narrated by an outsider. Great book for parents to read to their children to help them deal with the realities of bullying. What can happen when we move beyond a fear of differences to see the things we have in common?

Ms. Julie's Picks:

As Brave As You
Jason Reynolds
Chapter Book
Ages 10 and up
Although this book takes places in modern times, Brooklynites Genie and his brother Ernie feel as though they’ve gone back in time when they spend a month with their grandparents in the West Virginia Countryside, a land without . . . Wifi! Life in the country is full of pea picking, poop flinging, grit eating, crushes, and getting to know the grandparents they’ve barely seen along with their family’s secrets. Genie learns that being brave has as much to do with doing something outside of your comfort zone as the refusal to do so.
As Brave as You is a book about growing up, brotherhood, families and wounds that may never heal.
Kirkus Prize Winner - 2016 Schneider Family Book Award Winner Coretta Scott King Author Honor Book

Bolivar
Seth Rubin
Graphic Novel
Grades K-3
On the bustling streets of Manhattan Sybil is stalking her quiet, well-mannered neighbor in an effort to get photographic evidence. You see, Sybil desperately wants someone, anyone to believe her that her next door neighbor is a dinosaur! In fact, he is the last one on Earth.
Bolivar is a wonderfully illustrated tribute to New Yorkers and a call to slow down and open our eyes to all that surrounds us.

Ms. Gail's Favorites:

Refugee
Alan Gratz
Chapter Book
Grades 4-7
“Refugee” is a powerful story of survival by Alan Gratz
Refugee is a historical novel that depicts the lives of three refugee children. Josef, a Jewish boy escaping Nazi Germany in the 1930’s, Isabel, a girl adrift on a makeshift boat during the Cuban raft exodus in 1994 and Mahmoud a boy fleeing war torn Syria in 2015. The chapters of the book alternate between each character and their harrowing experiences as refugees. Captivating!

Truck Full of Ducks
Ross Burach
Picture Book
Ages 4-8
“Truck Full of Ducks” is a fun book by author, illustrator Ross Burach.
Where do you deliver a truck full of ducks when one on the ducks eats the directions? Follow the ducks as they travel around town to find out. A hilarious and suspenseful story with a surprise ending! Fun read aloud.
