Storytime Preview: 4 and 5 Year Old Storytime

Preview Storytime with Ms. Emma!
What: 4 and 5 year old storytime
When: Wednesdays at 2:00pm
(during the school year)
Length: 45 minutes

This storytime will help children along the road to independence by briefly separating them from their parents in a safe and friendly environment.
We will focus on the alphabet and learning letters in meaningful ways to create a solid foundation for recognizing sounds and printed words.

How do we achieve this?

During storytime we read 4 books together based around the letter of the day, and sometimes a theme.
For example, the theme for Letter A is apples and we will read:

Apple Pie ABC by Allison Murray
Bad Apple: A Tale of Friendship by Edward Hemingway
Ducking for Apples by Lynne Berry
One Red Apple by Harriet Ziefert

We also complete activities that focus on letter and word recognition, including:

- identifying the letter of the day -
- sight words -
- singing the alphabet -
- practicing writing the letter of the day -

Along with thematic rhymes, songs, and flannelboards, we also complete activities that review basic concepts like shapes, colors and numbers and begin to introduce more complex ideas, such as basic math and storytelling practices.

Each class we complete a craft related to the storytime.  Many of the crafts are designed to practice fine motor skills and include the use of glue sticks, scissors, and crayons.  While we do provide a sample of what the completed craft should look like, creativity is encouraged and many of the children come up with their own unique and creative designs using the materials we give them!
